Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center

Combining the career of Dr. Ralph Stanley with the history of traditional mountain music, this state-of-the-art, interactive museum will allow you to see and hear this particular style of American music in its original setting: the mountains of southwestern Virginia. Follow the career of Ralph Stanley & the Stanley Brothers through the exhibits and learn how the environment and traditional music influenced their style.

In October of 2004, a unique museum experience became available to music lovers: The Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center.

Combining the career of Dr. Ralph Stanley with the history of traditional mountain music, this interactive musical journey allows you to see and hear this particular style of American music in its original setting – the mountains of southwest Virginia.

Even if you’ve already been touched by his music, you haven’t fully experienced it until you’ve journeyed into the heart of Appalachia.

The Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center is located in a century-old four-story home in Clintwood, Virginia.

The vision for the museum and music center is to preserve and promote mountain and Bluegrass music with workshops, seminars, and conventions.

Heart of Appalachia

The Heart of Appalachia Tourism Authority was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1993 to promote, expand and develop the tourism industries of the coal-producing counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, Wise, and the City of Norton, within the Cumberland Plateau and LENOWISCO Planning Districts. We are governed by a Board of Directors with members from each of these localities. In 2013, we also opened the Heart of Appalachia Visitor's Center in St. Paul, Virginia; a Commonwealth of Virginia Certified Tourist Information Center. In addition to providing visitors and potential travelers with information about our region's natural beauty, unique attractions, events, activities, dining, lodging, shopping and more, we offer marketing, promotion, social media and hospitality training and assistance to our region's many business assets. We also offer facilities for meetings, events and social gatherings.
