Thunder River Outdoor Recreation and Campground is located along the Russell Fork River in what is known locally as the “Splashdam” area in Haysi, VA. The site, now owned by the Hill family, has become a destination for camping and outdoor recreation.

The location beside the river offers access for fishing, kayaking/canoeing/tubing, swimming and picnicking in a private setting. During the month of October, with the release of water from the John Flannagan Dam, Dickenson County and the Russell Fork become a destination for white water rafters. 

The property is also on an ATV route with access to the Haysi Ridgeview Trailhead approximately one mile away. The Haysi Ridgeview Trail is part of the Spearhead Trail system which in connection with the Coal Canyon trail offers approximately 200 miles of trails (connects to the town of Grundy and the Breaks Park).

The Lodge

81 rooms, and a two-room suite, offer the perfect, easy platform to begin your exploration. You can choose rooms with a single, king-sized bed, or those with two full-sized beds. Each is furnished with a television, refrigerator, coffee pot, hair dryer, ironing board, iron and one of God’s own views. The suite comes complete with a kitchenette, cookware and dishes. Smoking and non-smoking rooms are available. And if you don’t want to leave your four-legged friends behind, we understand and can accommodate that too for an additional fee. Lakefront Cabins

Perfect for accommodating family gatherings, wedding parties or a happy excursion with friends, our hand-hewn log cabins offer luxury in a serene waterfront setting. A covered front porch complete with rocking chairs welcomes you to a three-bedroom oasis. Inside you’ll discover a stone fireplace with gas logs, a washer, dryer and fully equipped kitchen. Each living area features a flat screen TV with DVD player, a pull out sofa and two recliners. The bedrooms are also furnished with flat screen TVs. And yes…we did save the best for last. Step out on to the back deck for a beautiful view of Laurel Lake—and your very own screened-in hot tub. A fifth two-bedroom cabin offers the same amenities but is handicapped accessible and can comfortably sleep 6. All cabins are non-smoking units. Sorry, no pets allowed.


Cabins will be rented in week increments during prime season, with check-in on Friday. They may be rented for less than week-long increments for reservations made with arrival dates within 30 days. Woodland Cottages

Our rustic cottages offer a restful contrast to complicated lives. Rustic, yes, but fully equipped with everything you’ll need. Nestled in the fringe of the forest near Beaver Pond, the four cottages are 2 bedroom, one bath split-levels and can sleep up to 6 adults. One bedroom features a queen-sized bed and the other has two twin beds. The living area has a flat screen TV, two recliners and a queen-sized pull out sofa. Kitchens are fully furnished with a four-burner stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, cookware, dishes and flatware. All cottages are non-smoking units. Sorry, no pets allowed.

Hometown Lodging offers great weekly, weekend or overnight stay in downtown Clintwood. The 2 bedroom, 2 bath with an eat-in kitchen offers a hometown feel along with the front porch sitting. Close proximity to numerous restaurants, outdoor adventure, the Ralph Stanley Museum and Birch Knob Tower.
